Water Oak Farm is an 11-acre property in the heart of the Constantia Valley. Five acres are fenced and allocated to the house and garden while the balance of the land is under vine. The views are simply fantastic and stretch for miles. The garden was established from scratch in 2001, on bare flat clay soil which required copious loads of manure and compost.
Two small dams were built with a trickling stream and the overall effect of a mix of fynbos and traditional Cape and English garden varieties, makes ambling through this garden a tranquil and inspiring experience.
Thankfully this beautiful garden was saved from the fires in 2015, and although it suffered minor damage as a result of the extreme heat, it has recovered beautifully. The garden is constantly changing, but favourite spots such as the meadow garden or water features remain. The garden is frequented by a wide variety of birdlife.
Water Oak is one of the gardens in the Western Cape chosen by international garden tours, and it is also the destination where SA Riding for the Disabled (SARDA) is holding their annual Open Garden fundraiser.
The South African Riding for the Disabled Association was founded in 1973 and is situated in Brommersvlei Road Constantia. Free therapeutic horse riding lessons are provided to around 200 riders from special needs schools in the Western Cape. 75% of our riders are from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. Horse riding has many therapeutic benefits and has the capability to improve the muscle tone, co-ordination and concentration of the rider.
We encourage you to support this local and very worthwhile fundraising initiative while giving yourself a relaxing day out. All you need to do is stroll around this little piece of heaven, enjoy the views and partake in some tea and cake.
